Clyde wanted to let everyone know they'd gotten it wrong, tell everyone that Barney wasn't a woman, tell everyone that he was a sissy! Barney however was thrilled at being called Bonnie!
J. Edgar Hoover knew, of course, and he used to chuckle about it as he slipped on a pretty dress each night! If the public only knew!
